Amazon's Best Books of October: This Week's Releases

TrespasserThe Best of the Month selections released this week run the gamut from delightful to devastating, and everything in between. There's a road trip romp, a western, a salve for slobs everywhere, and a presidential biography. In addition, there are two highly anticipated releases from Maria Semple and Tana French, author of our Spotlight Pick--The Trespasser. This thriller kept Senior Editor Seira Wilson "happily discombobulated, guessing at an ending that I didn't see coming."

Here are the best books of October, available Tuesday.

Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple

Maria Semple fans rejoice! The follow-up to Where'd You Go, Bernadette is finally here. Senior Editor Chris Schluep promises you'll find Semple's signature wit and quirk in spades, but in Today Will Be Different "she introduces a few weightier strands to the story that could signal more depth to come in future novels."

Messy by Tim Harford

Move over neat freaks. According to Senior Editor Adrian Liang, Messy: The Power of Disorder to Transform Our Lives, "bolsters the theory that disorder creates heightened alertness." You'll also appreciate the book's ability to help you make "peace with the level of disorder at your coworkers', staff's, or spouse's workspace."

News of the World by Paulette Jiles

Longlisted for the National Book Award in fiction, this post Civil War western features clear-cut good guys, and clear-cut bad guys, which is actually pretty refreshing. In it a war-weary widower risks his life to return a kidnapped girl to her family, but this errand proves more complex, and more worthwhile, than either could have imagined.

American Ulysses by Ronald C. White

Senior Editor Jon Foro says this "serious, exhaustive, and likely definitive [biography] is a tricky meld of comprehensive research and readable narrative, worthy of the pantheon of monumental presidential biographies."

Another Day in the Death of America by Gary Younge

Seven children and teens will be victims of gun violence on any given day in the United States. In Another Day in the Death of America,  UK-born Guardian columnist Gary Younge "wrenches our focus off cold statistics and turns it to the friends, families and neighborhoods shattered by these deaths." (Adrian Liang).
