From Stage to Page - Amazon Book ReviewThere's been a surge lately of romances riffing off stage productions such as My Fair Lady or Much Ado About Nothing. Not only do these stories appeal to the drama queen inside all of us, but it also sparks some catchy book titles.

Who better to pull together a list of romance novels based on plays or musicals than Elizabeth Michels, whose own new romance, The Rebel Heir, is inspired by a musical that took theatergoers by storm? Read on for Elizabeth's top five recommended reads. —Adrian

Do you love live theater? I sure do! The lights! The costumes! The music! The amazing stories!

Do you know what I love even more? Romance novels that are inspired by these wonderful plays and musicals. Over the years there have been many romance novels based on the plots of plays, but right now, they're everywhere!

Many of the latest releases from Romancelandia are giving their regards to Broadway. Not only am I happy to jump on this musical bandwagon, I'll also do a little soft shoe once I'm there. So get ready for the show, because here are my five favorite books adapted from theater.

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE by Theresa Romain – He is home from the war, wounded, weary, and looking for a wife. With his eye on the most desirable lady in town, he seeks help from the lady's best friend, a war widow, to assist him. The young widow is witty, but perhaps she's too clever for her own good because she falls for the man she's been pushing toward her friend. You guessed it. This book is based on Cyrano de Bergerac. This is a great adaptation of a longtime theater favorite.

THE UNLIKELY LADY by Valerie Bowman – She's an intellectual, and he's a devil-may-care bachelor. Neither has an interest in marriage, or an interest in the other for that matter—until they accidentally kiss at a wedding masquerade ball. This story is based on Much Ado About Nothing, and it's a must read. This author also gets bonus theater points for basing not only this book but all of the books in her Playful Brides series on famous plays. Get it? Play-ful Brides. She's so clever!

MY FAIR PRINCESS by Vanessa Kelly – She is the illegitimate daughter of a prince. She's also a girl who grew up in Italy, clueless about society, and now she's been summoned home to England. It's a good thing there's a handsome duke available to transform her into a lady! I wonder if he'll grow accustomed to her face, like breathing out, breathing in. This adaptation of My Fair Lady is sure to have you singing too!

HIS SCANDALOUS KISS by Sophie Barnes – Exiled from society with a face he hides from the world, he dares to attend a masquerade ball. That's where he hears her. Theirs is a clandestine romance while her popularity in society soars. But her interest lies with the brooding, masked man of her dreams. Based on The Phantom of the Opera, this book will have you turning pages so you too can hear the music of the night.

And...jazz hands for the big finish! I hope you enjoy these great romances borrowed graciously from the stage. Now if you'll excuse me, the con artist in The Rebel Heir along with 76 trombones are leading the big parade, and I need to march with them. You guessed it: This one's inspired by The Music Man! Happy reading!   —Elizabeth Michels
