August's Celebrity Picks: Amy Schumer

SchumerAmy Schumer--the award-winning, wise cracking, Anna Wintour-impersonating writer, producer, director and comedian extraordinaire--has now (finally!) penned her first book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. In this collection of essays, infused with her signature acerbic wit, she reveals that she's fallen in love in the airport security line (that's how long they've gotten), is actually an introvert, and I'm guessing a Stieg Larsson fan. More importantly, you will learn what has given Schumer the courage to be what actress Tilda Swinton describes as "an honesty bomb," a feminist phenom, and someone who is influencing the cultural conversation one clever barb at a time.

We asked Ms. Schumer what she's been reading lately. Here are a few of her favorites.

You'll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein
Jessi is one of my favorite people to write and think with. We both wrote books that are coming out this summer, and I would rather you read her book than mine. She is brilliant in her perspective of the silly trappings of womanhood.

The Professional by W.C. Heinz
This book profiles a boxer before the greatest match of his life, but it is also about me and everyone else who has ever had to fight through fear for something they really want. I read it a long time ago, but then re-read it in preparation for filming my HBO Special. It's essential reading as far as I'm concerned, and I love the reminder that "a fight is won on the road." Nothing has helped me relax more on stage than this idea.

My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem
You know who she is and why she is so important. But do you know how funny, restless, and honest she is? I love these tales of Gloria on the road as a child and as an adult who constantly travels. I have always admired her for the fact that she has never dissolved or disintegrated into anger. Instead, she has patience and a sense of humor--and the origins of these superpowers are detailed in this book.
