James Patterson Wants Us to Read More

Amazon Book Review: BookShots"I'm Jim and I'm a disruptor."

So began James Patterson's appropriately brief and to-the-point introduction to his new line of "Book Shots": short, straightforward stories that "take the fat out of" the typical bestseller. Like the late Elmore Leonard, whom he quoted, Patterson said he likes to leave out the parts that most people skip, anyway; in these books – coming a few a month, a full cadence to be determined later – Patterson and his co-authors will pare down his rat-a-tat delivery even further. But make no mistake: these are not novellas, nor are they Cliff Notes for Patterson novels. They're jam-packed, action- and dialogue-filled full experiences at 150 pages or less.

No muss, no fuss. And probably lots of sales. Patterson said the first printings are announced at 500,000.

While Patterson won't write all the titles himself - he has already outlined 80% of them, he said – he has oversight over all of them, as he has over the books in his "regular" line. And, not surprisingly, most will be fiction (some involving characters readers already know), though Patterson (who was interviewed at the press conference by NPR personality Michele Norris) can't resist pointing out, and cracking about, one of the inaugural titles: Trump vs. Clinton, a collection of quotes and statements from the two presidential candidates. (One of his next nonfiction entries, he hopes, will be the same in-their-own words style: Jesus vs. the Devil, from the Bible, plays, and books.)

The purpose of the line, he says, "is to get people to read more."

BookShots will be available in all formats. See all of the announced titles here.
