Best Children's Books of 2016 So Far

EmailGraphicCut_178HHere we are at the midway mark of 2016. The holidays are still a long way off (I can pretend, can't I?) and all I can see is summer, glorious summer....

Besides giving people in the Pacific Northwest a serious attitude change (we can get grumpy by month four of grey skies), this time of year also means choosing The Best Children's Books of the Year So Far.

While I love going back over all my favorite books that came out between January and June, whittling them down to (only) 20 books per category feels like trying to pick a team without leaving any good players behind. This was an especially painful year for making hard choices in the picture book (ages 3-5) and middle grade (ages 9-12) categories.

Below are the titles that took the top spot in each children's books category along with links to see the rest of our hand-picked favorites.
