The Best Romances of May

Best of the month - Amazon Book ReviewThis month just bursts with marvelous small-town romances. Jude Devereaux, Susan Mallery, Mary Alice Monroe, Linda Howard, MaryJanice Davidson, and Donna Kauffman have all set their latest novels in little towns with big hearts. But New York, Nashville, and London still can host a darn good love story, too.

Read on for a snapshot of some of the best romances of May.

The Girl from Summer Hill by Jude Devereaux - Set in a small Virginia town that's hosting a stage version of Pride and Prejudice, The Girl from Summer Hill doesn't pack many surprises but still delivers a solid romance with potent humor and sympathetic heroine and hero in chef Casey Reddick and Hollywood star Tate Landers. There are, perhaps, a few too many cast members who have major and minor in this new series-starter, but that's a minor quibble.

Troublemaker by Linda Howard - Two stubborn strangers—a covert operative who's gotten himself on someone's kill lest, and a police chief with the smartest dog on the planet—have to learn to live together when Morgan lands on her doorstep asking for a place to stay while he recovers from a gunshot wound to the chest. A person who likes her privacy and her space, Bo gradually grows accustomed to his presence as he rehabilitates, but the unknown person behind his near-assassination has no intention of letting Morgan live. Howard slowly weaves the emotional chain between Bo and Morgan, giving it an authentic grip, even as danger continues to prowl around the edges. Dog lovers will especially appreciate Tricks, who is a major character in her own right.

Danger, Sweetheart by MaryJanice Davidson - If you're looking for a read that's original and, well, completely bonkers, look no further. Las Vegas-based Blake Tarbell moves to Sweetheart, North Dakota, to work on a farm in order to make his mom happy and to get control of his sizable bank account again. Natalie Lane is determined to do anything to help Sweetheart regain its livelihood, even if it means teaming up with the "Las Vegas Douche," as she's nicknamed him. Davidson's writing is full-on stream-of-consciousness, which is 95 percent hilarious and a teeny bit exhausting. Her beginning note about how she's trying to include as many romance tropes as possible (and then lists them at the end) might strike some as patronizing, but her sheer joy in this pursuit shines through in every sentence.

Heart Breaker by Erin McCarthy - County music stars Jolene Hart and Chance Rivers had a whirlwind romance and a cataclysmic breakup—all in the public eye. Now, months later, their manager wants them to make up and make songs together, so Jolene and Chance head off to a remote cabin to build the album required by their contract. As they rehash the pain, betrayal, and excitement of their romance, a second chance blooms if only they can recognize it. McCarthy's characters ring true, as do the emotional ties and emotional toxicity that pulls them together and pushes them apart even as it teaches them maturity. Plus: sizzling chemistry!

Charmingly Yours by Liz Talley - A small-town girl in New York City for the first time and the son of an Italian restauranteur meet, help each other realize their dreams, and fall—despite their expectations—in love. This sweet but not-fluffy novel brings out the best of Rosemary and Sal as they reassess who they want to be and how to be truly happy. A quiet, "charming" winner.
