Smarter Faster Better: A Conversation With Charles Duhigg

DuhiggI read a lot of business books. I read them for our Best Books of the Month in Business & Leadership and for lists like our 100 Leadership & Success Books to Read in a Lifetime. I generally glean useful information from these books, but there are times when I wonder if maybe I've read enough--maybe I should be doing and not reading. If you read 50 books on productivity, are you really using your time in a productive way?

Part of my job is to read these books, so the answer for me is "yes." But for many people, reading a list of business books might not be the best approach. What's interesting about Charles Duhigg's Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business is that it can take the place of several business books, which is actually productive in itself.

The book looks at eight principles of productivity. Those principles are:

  • motivation
  • teams
  • focus
  • goal setting
  • managing others
  • decision making
  • innovation
  • absorbing data

You could read a book on each of these principles, or you could read this book. If your desire is to be productive, Smarter Faster Better is a good place to start.

Recently, Charles Duhigg (who also wrote the best seller The Power of Habit) was in the Amazon offices to talk to employees about his new book. We sat down beforehand for a chat.
