Reading "Partners," John Grisham's New Kindle Single

PartnersThis weekend I read John Grisham's Kindle Single Partners, which has ranked very high on the Kindle best sellers list since it was published at the end of March. The story is billed as a "standalone prequel to his #1 bestseller Rogue Lawyer," which is accurate; you don't need to have read Rogue Lawyer to enjoy this Single. Partners is a short story (60 pages) about a specific legal case that explains how the rogue lawyer himself, Sebastian Rudd, first met the man who would become his driver, bodyguard, law clerk, and partner.

At times in the story, I felt that Grisham was abbreviating his writing—telling and not showing, just to keep it short—but the overall effect of reading the prequel was to make the characters that much more real. Grisham clearly cares about the people he's writing about, and that shows through. I cared about them, too.

So I hope more authors will take Grisham's lead. And I hope Grisham will write more Singles. One of the big advantages that books have over other forms of media, like television and movies, is that they can place the reader right inside the head of a character. Partners accomplishes this with a story that might not have translated into a full novel, and Grisham fans are richer for the experience. It's a fun, satisfying read.

After reading Partners, I reached out to the Kindle team for a list of other Singles that might enrich our understanding of an author's world:
