Pat Conroy (1945-2016)

Pat Conroy, author of the bestselling novels The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini, died on Friday, March 4. Conroy had been battling pancreatic cancer.

Pat ConroyConroy's personal experiences and troubled family life inspired many of his works. His memories of his formative years at The Citadel led to the writing of his first book, The Boo, and his time teaching at a small school in South Carolina was the basis of The Water Is Wide. The Great Santini, Conroy's first novel, explored his painful and sometimes abusive relationship with his father.

Conroy followed up with The Lords of Discipline--also about The Citadel--and then his most beloved book, The Prince of Tides. Conroy's final book, The Death of Santini, is a memoir about how Conroy and his father healed the rift between them, bringing to life one of the most quoted lines from The Prince of Tides: "In families there are no crimes that cannot be forgiven."

Conroy died at age 70.
