Celebrity Picks: Mindy Kaling's Favorite Reads of 2015

Mindy-Kaling"When I heard that Amazon wanted me to list three books I've read this year, I was like, oh boy, better go read some books, fast. And not just ones about Crock-Pot recipes."

I can't write anything funnier than that, but the star of The Office and The Mindy Project can--and her new memoir-ish collection of essays proves it. From her own show business career to observations on Hollywood's peculiar reality to her relationships, industry and otherwise, Why Not Me? is an assured, insightful, and delightful collection.

We asked Mindy for her own favorite reads of 2015. See her picks below, and look here for more celebrity favorites. Learn more about the Amazon Books Editors' picks for the Best Books of the Year.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
The protagonist of this thriller is a sad, fat, obsessive, unemployed drunk woman. Rachel's my bleak Bridget Jones, nursing a breakup and solving a murder mystery at the same time.

Herzog by Saul Bellow
I read an interview with director Noah Baumbach where he talked about taking inspiration for his movie Greenberg from this book. I also knew the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man has a lot of similarities to it. I love those filmmakers and those movies, so I thought I would read Herzog. Herzog has such a pitiful life of endless sorrows but I was surprised by how much I was smiling when I read the book.
